The Play’s the Thing! The Stratford Club, a Shakespeare reading group, meets at the Concord Public Library on Mondays at 1:30pm, from October-May. This intergenerational club has been meeting since 1881, and is currently welcoming new members. We read and discuss three plays each year, usually a history in the fall, tragedy in the winter, and comedy in the spring. No prior knowledge of Shakespeare is necessary, just an interest in engaging with the Bard and getting to know his works. Given the content of both the plays and discussions, the Stratford Club is probably best suited for adults and high school students. Ashuelot Concerts – The Ashuelot Concerts Schools Program uses live music to inspire all children to explore the limitless potential of their brains. This program brings internationally-renowned musicians to groups of homeschoolers. These artists have all overcome seemingly impossible challenges to succeed in pursuing their passion. Our message is that something that feels difficult or impossible today, can quickly become achievable and enjoyable with the right attitude, work, determination and learning techniques. Turning something impossible into something you love is at the heart of what it means to be a professional chamber musician as well as many other professions. This program brings the concert experience from some of the world’s leading concert halls to our rural landscape. K-12 children have the opportunity to sit just a few feet away from rare and historic string instruments made by Stradivarius or Amati 400 years ago, played by some of the world’s leading classical musicians. Alongside the incredible music, each 45 minute presentation follows a them. Some examples:
• How daily habits can change what we are capable of achieving.
• Is something difficult in class, or is it just new?
• Talent does not exist!
• What music tells us about how to communicate.
• Why we need contrast and variety in life.
After each presentation we offer time for questions and interaction with the musicians. $10 individual, $30 family of three or more.
